Newcastle University leads the way in the North East
On 17 May, Tom Graham, University Librarian, the University of Newcastle formally completed the Registration of the Library with Inspire. Inspire is delighted to welcome the University to head the list of libraries signing up in the North East.

28 April 2005
The first meeting of the Inspire North East Steering group was held in Newcastle on April 27th.

Members represented the HE, Public Library, FE, Health and Special library sectors as well as NEMLAC. They also represented different geographical areas from across the region.

Inspire has already been widely discussed in the North East as a result of research with an extensive sample of libraries from across the region as to their attitudes to the Inspire proposal. (This research was commissioned by NEMLAC and carried out by Information Society Research Community, at the University of Northumbria.)

The group agreed that
  1. the roll-out of Inspire in the North East would be managed by the central steering group initially but that implementation would be on a sub-regional basis
  2. From a comprehensive list of libraries in the region supplied by NEMLAC, they would identify the first tranche of libraries to be approached for sign up to Inspire
  3. Over the next three weeks a briefing letter would be drawn up to be sent to the relevant Chief Librarians across the region asking them for their commitment to Inspire
The next meeting will be held on June 6th 2005 at Teesside University

Implementing INSPIRE in the North East. Final Report
In August 2004, NEMLAC (the North East Museums Library and Archives Council) commissioned the Information Society Research Community at Northumbria University to undertake a short-term project to introduce INSPIRE to the North East.

This project, led by Dr Graham Walton, investigated the response of the five universities and the 9 public library authorities in the region to the aims and objectives of Inspire. The project also interviewed libraries from other sectors in the region. The results indicated extensive enthusiasm for the introduction of Inspire. Some concerns about how the programme would work were expressed but greater awareness of the detail of the roll out will resolve all these issues. The Final report has now been published and is available for download here.
