Berks, Oxon and Bucks sub region - News and
Events
4 November 2005
Milton Keynes Inspire
The Milton Keynes Learning City Libraries Network has recently launched
Milton Keynes Inspire (http://www.mkinspire.org.uk)
and has provided us with a foretaste of what Inspire England will
create on a national basis.
Milton Keynes Inspire is an online database which allows anyone to
find out about collections held in libraries or information centres
in and around the city. Almost 60 collections have already been added
and the database can be searched by subject, names of people or organisations,
places and dates. The database also includes the location details
of the collection, information on disabled access, and group and educational
visits.
Milton Keynes Inspire was launched on 4 November by Big George, local
broadcaster and composer, at a ceremony at the Open University.
The Milton Keynes Learning City Libraries Network was established
in 2001 and includes seven libraries from the public, university,
college and hospital sectors. The creation of Milton Keynes Inspire
has been a key project for this group this year and, as well as creating
the database, the programme has also involved library awareness raising
activities with groups of students on Adult Education courses and
a work exchange scheme among staff in libraries from throughout the
group plus local museums, archives and galleries.
The project was hosted by the Open University under the guidance of
its Manager Josephine Burt and much of the work was carried out by
the Project Officer Dr Kwasi Darko-Ampem.
The Network is already looking at future developments and hopes to
extend the database and access arrangements into North Buckinghamshire
and the surrounding areas. They are also looking at options such as
resource sharing and simultaneous access to online library catalogues.
As well as support from the Library Network members, the project was
sponsored by SEMLAC (the South East Museum Library and Archive Council),
the Milton Keynes Economy and Learning Partnership and supported by
Milton Keynes Adult Continuing Education Centre and the City Discovery
Centre.

Thames Valley Inspire
(TV Inspire)
The Thames Valley Inspire group have met again and are moving towards
agreement on how they will develop access pathways in the Berks, Oxon
and Bucks sub Region. The group is led by John Wolstenholme and members
are:
- SCL - Bucks, Milton Keynes, Oxfordshire, Reading, Slough, West
Berks, Windsor and Maidenhead, and Wokingham Libraries
- SEUL - Thames Valley, Reading, Oxford Brookes, BCUC and Open
Universities (and Brunel University)
The immediate aim is to have some arrangements in place by September
and then depending on funding to set up a web presence. Current activities
centre around setting up a mailing list, agreeing a charter, flowchart
of pathways, referral form and signing up to the INSPIRE kitemark.
